About

Knobby, in a few words.

Illustrated portrait of Knobby

I’m Knobby. Born and bred in Auckland, New Zealand. I live in East Auckland.

The nickname comes from my surname. My father got called Knobby, my cousins get called Knobby—pretty much every male in the family does. Originality clearly wasn’t part of the brief.

I’m a self-employed Chartered Accountant, which currently occupies rather more of my life than I’d like. Outside work, I enjoy getting outdoors, travelling, fishing, and an excellent beer or glass of wine. Preferably with enough time to appreciate it.

I also coach my son’s hockey team and help out with Junior Surf at Kariaotahi Beach, near Waiuku. Both are good reasons to step away from a desk.

I’m married with three children, aged 11, 9, and 3. My wife is French; we met in a bar twenty years ago. I’m now a French citizen too, so that turned out to be quite a consequential drink.

Gone Off on a Tangent exists because I wanted somewhere to write. No particular niche, no grand plan. Just somewhere for stories, observations, opinions, projects, and whatever else happens to catch my attention. Some posts will be in English, others in French.

Expect the occasional dry remark, some questionable attempts at humour, and possibly a bit of colourful language. I spend enough time making things balance at work. This place can afford a few loose ends.
